Species: Dog
Condition: Ulcerative Colitis
Organ System: Urogenital
Autoimmune inflammation of the bowel. The dog’s immune system attacks its own tissues impairing the integrity of the intestinal wall. Ulcerative colitis usually occurs in dogs younger than one year. They are defecating more often and are straining while doing so. The stool can contain traces of blood and mucus. Nausea and vomiting with weight loss, abdominal pain and lethargy are some other signs to pay attention to. It is necessary to seek veterinary help in severe cases; the vet will administer anti-inflammatory drugs. Affected dogs need to be on a special, prescription diet. The vet will provide the nutrition guidelines.
